How to find a lost Apple Pencil nearby

Apple Pencil models connect over Bluetooth, but their findability differs. Apple lists Find My features for Apple Pencil Pro; for other models, your best first steps are a physical search, checking the paired iPad, and confirming the Pencil still has power.

Short answer

A BLE scan may provide a nearby signal clue only while the Pencil is powered and advertising. It cannot wake a discharged Pencil, show a map location, or guarantee that an unnamed signal is your Pencil.

01

Before you start

  • Check whether your model supports Find My; Apple Pencil Pro has specific Find My features on compatible iPads.

  • Look beside the paired iPad, magnetic charging edge, keyboard case, desk, sofa, and bag first.

  • Keep the paired iPad nearby because the Pencil may reconnect to it.

  • Confirm Bluetooth is enabled in Settings, not only disconnected in Control Center.

  • Search promptly: a low Pencil battery reduces the useful window.

02

Search step by step

  1. 01

Open Find My on the compatible iPad if you use Apple Pencil Pro.

  2. 02

Check the Batteries widget and Settings > Bluetooth on the paired iPad for a sign that the Pencil is connected.

  3. 03

Open BLE Detector on iPhone and watch for a recognizable or newly appearing nearby entry.

  4. 04

Move slowly around the likely room and inspect surfaces whenever a candidate signal strengthens repeatedly.

Lost something nearby?

Start with a Bluetooth scan.

Open BLE Detector, choose a likely device and move slowly. A rising signal is a useful clue that you are getting closer.

If it does not appear

!

The Pencil is discharged

Without power it cannot send the Bluetooth signal needed for a live scan.

!

It is attached to another device

A connected or sleeping accessory may advertise differently. Check the iPad it was paired with.

!

The model is not identifiable

Bluetooth entries may not expose a friendly product name. Never treat a generic identifier as proof.
