How to find lost AirPods nearby
Start with Apple’s Find My because it can show a current or last-known location and may play a sound. If you already know the likely room and the earbuds are powered on and transmitting, a Bluetooth signal scan can provide another nearby-search clue.
Follow a trend, not a distance.
BLE Detector can help you narrow down a nearby search by showing whether a discoverable Bluetooth signal becomes stronger as you move. It is not a replacement for Find My, a map, or Precision Finding.
Before you start
- ✓
Use Apple Find My first and check the map or last-known location.
- ✓
Keep Bluetooth permission enabled for BLE Detector.
- ✓
Take the earbuds out of a fully closed case if possible; some models reduce or stop advertising while inside.
- ✓
Search one small area at a time and move slowly.
- ✓
Remember that walls, your body, furniture, and other radios can change the reading.
Search step by step
- 01
Open Find My and use Play Sound or Find Nearby when those options are available.
- 02
If you are at the likely location, open BLE Detector and wait for the device list to settle.
- 03
Choose a recognizable AirPods or headphone entry. If names are hidden, compare the strongest candidates one by one.
- 04
Walk in different directions. Treat a consistently stronger signal across several readings as a clue, then check drawers, cushions, bags, and the floor nearby.

They are inside the charging case
A closed case can change whether a model advertises a signal. Open the case or remove an earbud when you can.
The battery is empty
A powered-off device cannot transmit the BLE packets this type of finder needs.
They are out of range
Use Find My for the remote or last-known location. A local BLE scan only sees signals that reach your iPhone.
Frequently asked questions
Can Bluetooth show the exact location of my AirPods?+
No. Signal strength is a proximity clue, not a GPS coordinate or guaranteed distance.
Can it find AirPods with a dead battery?+
No live Bluetooth scanner can receive a signal from an AirPod that is not powered and transmitting. Check Find My for the last-known location.
Why do I see several unnamed devices?+
Some BLE devices hide or rotate identifying data. Use signal changes carefully and verify the physical item before assuming a match.
